Elias returned to Bellmere before sunset.<\/p>

The streets were crowded, but no one was speaking.<\/p>
Every person seemed to be listening.<\/p>
At the center of town, the river had stopped moving.<\/p>
Not slowed.<\/p>
Stopped.<\/p>
The surface was perfectly still.<\/p>
People stood along the bank staring at it.<\/p>
Elias found his grandmother waiting outside the house.<\/p>
"You went to the observatory."<\/p>
"Yes."<\/p>
"You saw him."<\/p>
"Yes."<\/p>
She closed her eyes.<\/p>
"Then there is very little time."<\/p>
"What is under the river?"<\/p>
She took his hand.<\/p>
"The first Bellmere."<\/p>
He stared at her.<\/p>
"What does that mean?"<\/p>
"Before this town was built, another town stood here. It was called Merrow."<\/p>
"Why have I never heard of it?"<\/p>
"Because it was erased."<\/p>
"By whom?"<\/p>
"By itself."<\/p>
His grandmother led him into the house and opened an old cabinet.<\/p>
Inside were dozens of notebooks.<\/p>
Diaries.<\/p>
Maps.<\/p>
Photographs.<\/p>
Records.<\/p>
She placed one notebook in front of him.<\/p>
"Your grandfather spent his life studying Merrow."<\/p>
Elias opened it.<\/p>
The first page contained a drawing of the river.<\/p>
Beneath it was a sentence.<\/p>
MERROW DID NOT SINK.<\/p>
IT WAS MOVED.<\/p>
Elias turned the pages.<\/p>
There were drawings of streets beneath the water. Towers. Bridges. Houses.<\/p>
And at the center of everything was a massive circular door.<\/p>
