During summer, the water moved lazily between stone banks. During winter, it rose until the old wooden docks disappeared beneath it. The people of Bellmere had learned to respect the river. They did not swim after sunset. They did not build houses too close to the bank. And, most importantly, they never ignored the lanterns.<\/p><p class=\"re-p\">There was one lantern in particular.<\/p><p class=\"re-p\">It stood at the end of the old eastern pier, where the river bent sharply toward the forest. The lantern was mounted on a black iron post and had burned for longer than anyone could remember. No one knew who lit it first. Some said it had been placed there by the founder of Bellmere.
